HIP (Hockey initiation program) INFORMATION

HIP is designed by USA Hockey to be the first contact between your child and the sport of hockey.

The program meets from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays on the Olympic Rink at the Big Bear Arena and runs from October through February.

HIP is for boys and girls ages from 4-8 and is designed for beginning hockey players.  It focuses on an introduction to basic skating skills and advances to basic hockey drills.  Players that are 5-8 years old may move up during the season if the coaches feel they would do better with players their own age based on their skill level.

Mandatory Equipment for HIP:

  • Helmet
  • Hockey pants
  • Gloves
  • Elbow & Shin Pads
  • Skates
  • Stick
  • Mouth Guard
  • Hockey socks/jersey
  • Neck Protector
  • Chest Protector

Parents are more than welcome to go on the ice with their player(s) at this level.  Helmets and hockey skates must be worn at all times.

In order to go on the ice, parents must complete a background check, Safesport training, and go to USA hockey and either register as a volunteer or a coach.  All costs are reimbursed by SMHA so submit all your receipts in one email to Diane Maleport when completed.  These are paid in January.
